Factors To Consider When Installing Retractable Pool Roof Enclosures

October 7th, 2010 No comments

With a pool roof enclosure, your outdoor pool becomes more useful since you can go for a swim even in chilly weather. Retractable pool roof enclosures are even more useful since they allow the sun to shine into the pool area. This means you can still enjoy your swim in sunny weather, which is the perfect time to do so. Despite this, many pool owners are still unaware of the benefits presented by installing a retractable roof over their pool area.

Before we get to the benefits presented by these enclosures, it is important to describe what they are. These are similar to a sunroom on wheels. This means that they provide an indoor setting but with an outdoor view. However, they also go a step further to provide you with the best from both worlds since they can be opened up to the outdoors.

In order to enjoy fully the advantages presented by the enclosures, it is important to take certain considerations in mind when installing them. The first consideration is the size of the enclosure. This is determined by a whole bunch of factors starting with the space available, pool specifications and the buyers requirements.

The second consideration is style or design. Normally there are two main options when it comes to this. First, there are freestanding enclosures and extensions on pre-constructed structures. With the freestanding design option, you have freedom with the use of space compared to extensions, which are determined by the other structure.

The operation mode of the enclosure is also an important consideration. Most of the enclosures have a fix track opening system, which should meet local building standards and also make it easier to open and close it. There are also some enclosures, which have an automated retractable system, which makes it easier to open and close the enclosure by simply pushing a button. This way you can enjoy outdoors almost immediately.

Lastly, the enclosure configuration is the last major consideration. This is very important especially if your enclosure will be extended from the main house. This is because you have to choose the side that the retraction sits on carefully. By choosing the side far from your house, you can be able to use the other side for other functions such as sitting. The location of the windows and doors as well as the size and type of the panels is also determined by the configuration. Apart from this, it is important to ensure that the structure is properly installed to withstand the rain and snow conditions in your area. This way you can be assured of having the enclosure for a long time.

Satisfying the requirements in all these areas will ensure you reap maximum benefits from your enclosure. Some of these benefits to expect include extending your living area, protection from insects and bugs such as wasps and mosquitoes and exposure to the suns warmth without the danger of harmful UV rays.

Although the retractable pool roof enclosures need maintenance, it should be done occasionally and normally involves cleaning with high-pressure washers or a soft cloth and mild soap.

Whether it is pool enclosures for observatories, operable skylights over an indoor swimming pool or large span retractable roofs for an indoor water park, an expert in retractable enclosures is up to the job.

Keeping Mosquitoes Out Of Your Garden

October 4th, 2010 No comments

Anyone with a lovely garden, patio or deck will surely enjoy sitting outside on a bright summer’s day or evening. But if there is one thing that can spoil it for you, it is mosquitoes. Sometimes, it only takes one of two persistent mosquitoes to make your blood boil. Mosquitoes are a nuisance for sure, but they can also be a health hazard, speading dengue fever and malaria and several other really nasty diseases. So how do you go about keeping mosquitoes out of your garden?

Maybe you cannot realistically hope to keep mosquitoes out of your garden entirely, but there are some things you can do to deter them and keep their numbers down. Stopping them breeding in your garden is the first step to take. Mosquitoes do not have a long flying span. A lot of the mosquitoes that bother you in your garden will have been born in your garden.

Mosquitoes lay their eggs in stagnant water, so make sure that there is none in your garden. They will lay eggs in water butts, dogs’ bowls, water that has collected in old tyres, bottles and tins and your rubbish bins, so make sure that no water can collect anywhere. Blocked gutters are another breeding site. if you have a water feature, put fish in it to eat the larvae.

Mosquitoes detest the smell of lemon, so you could grow citronella plants, lemon thyme, lemon grass and even a lemon tree, if the type of weather is right. Otherwise, you could burn citronella scented candles or oil in the surrounding area They not only keep the mosquitoes away, but the smell is very fresh and envigourating.

If they are still plaguing you, you may have to resort to mosquito repellent. You could drench your clothing with permethrin, like the army does for jungle combat or just smeer a deet-based product on your skin. There are also plenty of green mosquito repellents too, like lemon oil, citronella and eucalyptus oil.

Garlic is supposed to repel mosquitoes, so you could try growing garlic close at hand. It is also believed to repel ticks and has demonstrated to discourage greenfly (aphids) from roses. What could be greener, particularly if you are partial to garlic too?

You could hang up one or two of those lanterns that attract insects to them and then vapourize them with a high voltage shock. These electric bug zappers are particularly proficient at destroying mosquitoes and house flies, which can also be a nuisance when you are lounging out of doors.

They are inexpensive and will last for years. They give off a pleasing glow and some claim to be able to clear areas of a quarter, a half and even a full acre of land of all flying insects by the use of the ultraviolet light and pheromones.

By using some or all of the above methods of keeping mosquitoes out of your garden, you should be able to enjoy your drink, a chat or a snooze in complete peace and freedom from flies and mosquitoes.

The Benefits Of Pool Enclosures

September 14th, 2010 No comments

The benefits of using pool enclosures are many. The number one benefit is pool use no matter what the temperature is outside. Those in the more northern areas have little time for summer temperatures. Too quickly warm weather is over and so is the fun. The other nine months of the year the pool is covered and useless.

Using an enclosure allows for year round use. Commercial use keeps customers coming back when other businesses have to close their pools down for the year. The cost is less than creating a set indoor heated pool environment. Residential use is the same. It is as if a new outdoor room has been added on to the home.

One of the first questions asked is if the property tax goes up with the new structure. The enclosure is considered a temporary structure and therefore not subject to additional taxing. The local zoning board will need to be consulted before installing it. There may be regulations regarding its allowable height, width and visibility.

Many types of enclosures exist. There are those that are fixed like a permanent room. Others are fixed but can be removed when the pool is in use or to enjoy the open air. Still others are retractable. These are set on rails and move across the entire pool length. These have the option of moving to allow in fresh air or remaining in place to have fun in the sun, wind, or rain. The movement can be motorized or manual.

The construction is specially made to retain heat without condensation. If the pool is heated, the temperature will remain relatively the same no matter the season. Leaves will no longer be a problem because they will never make it into the pool. Maintenance will be drastically reduced as will the amount of chemical needed.

Cleaning up the outside of the structure is easy. It is as simple as sweeping off the dirt and leaves. Snow may be squeegeed off. The construction is designed to keep out the elements. It should be able to stand up to strong winds. It would not do for it to blow away.

Each panel is made of either insulated glass or polycarbonate. This keeps in the heat of the sun and creates solar energy. The glass has a thermal glaze, this can increase the temperature of the pool by up to twenty degrees. The glass is also treated to keep any fogging or condensation from building up. Professional installation is best but they are considered easy to install.

The pool enclosures are available in different heights. Some are high enough and wide enough to enclose the pool and surrounding patio. These also have the head room to allow standing. The low profile ones allow swimming but standing is not possible. These are ideal since they are so low they are not visible by neighbors and minimally affect the line of the backyard. They are available in several shapes as well as material. They can be beautiful and create and outdoor oasis for the entire year.

Whether it is operable skylights for observatories, pool enclosures over an indoor swimming pool or large span indoor waterpark enclosures for an indoor water park, an expert in retractable enclosures is up to the job.

The Need For Patio Heaters In Business

September 2nd, 2010 No comments

If you own a restaurant, pub or any business using outdoor amenities in a temperate climate zone, then you will know that custom is likely to drop off when the weather gets cooler. You know that you would not sit outside shivering yourself, so you do not count on anyone else to do it. The only answer is to modify the outdoor ambient temperature to an acceptable level.

I have seen this done to stunning effect in Prague in October when there were heavy snow storms. People wanted to sit outside and get pleasure from the snow storm as long as they were pretty warm. A person’s primary heat comes from the body and is retained with sufficient clothing, but it is nice to have a patio heater near-by just to add a glow to your face and hands.

If you have a business that only opens when it is warm enough, then you have an expensive business and these days expensive businesses do not last long. You need to wring every last cent out of your business real estate and if that means putting patio heaters in, then that is what you ought to do.

Patio heaters come in a range of guises, but they are not that expensive to buy. Sometimes you can rent them too. Most of these outdoor heaters run on bottles of propane or butane gas, but there are mains gas varieties too. There are also electric ones, but they tend to be costly to run, unless you can generate your own electricity.

I think that the best two types are the box type where the gas cylinder goes inside the apparatus and the heat is directed at foot to knee height and the street lantern style, where the heat comes down from about seven or eight feet in height. The gas container also fits inside these models lowering their centre of gravity and making them more difficult to unintentionally knock over.

These heaters are very safe although patrons should be advised to exercise care if they have young children with them. A standard heater will keep up to two tables and eight people warm enough to enjoy themselves even while it is snowing.

The hire of a few of these patio heaters or even their purchase will soon be off-set by your increased trade, particularly if your competitors are not using them. My wife and I will never forget our time in Prague, when it was snowing, drinking coffee and eating cake outside, watching people go by while we were as warm as toast thanks to the restaurateur’s prudence in providing patio heaters.

Patio Furniture

August 21st, 2010 No comments

If you have a lovely patio or deck or a beautiful garden, then you need to have good patio furniture in order to get pleasure from it. There is no finer end to a busy day than sitting outside on the patio with a drink and a newspaper or a book. I like to sit in the garden after the sun has weakened a little, but before the mosquitoes come out, for a few hours reading a book.

There are many different styles of patio furniture to choose from that range from classic to modern. There is also a full range of choice in that there are chairs, loungers, swinging sofas, tables, outdoor fridges, barbecue sets and patio heaters amongst other things. A full set need not cost more than $1,000, but you can start with a table and two chairs and build up your patio furniture set step by step.

The many choices you have when looking for patio furniture are the style and the material it is made from. Most patio furniture stays outside all day and all night in any weather, so it important to get furniture that is well-made and weather-proof. All weather furniture is normally made from plastic-coated steel, wicker, massive wood or moulded plastic.

Whatever you choose, make sure that the guarantee makes your choice worth the money. For example, I mean, if the furniture costs $200, but has a 12 month guarantee, then you should be prepared to pay $4 a week for your investment and everything else is a bonus.

Another tip is to buy your patio furniture from a respectable manufacturer or a trustworthy retailer, unless it is massive timber furniture in which case you will want a reliable local craftsman. It depends where you live of course, but any patio furniture is going to have a hard time of it and it will stay outside sometimes no matter what your intentions are now.

Standard plastic patio furniture is pretty good and will stand up to all but the coldest of weather, which can make it become brittle. Prolonged exposure to high temperatures can have the same effect on cheap plastic chairs. White is the usual colour, but there are others. Make sure that you buy something that will take your weight, especially if you are a bit on the heavy side. I have had legs of plastic chairs go on me, but luckily I was on grass both times. On concrete or near the edge of raised decking could be very serious.

Once you have chosen your patio tables, chairs and possibly loungers, there are one or two other items that I think are essential to allowing the complete enjoyment of your patio deck. For example, if you want to use your outdoor furniture in the evening you may find it chilly or you may be bothered by insects.

This need not be a problem. You can get a patio heater for quite a reasonable price. A gas patio heater will keep up to eight people lovely and warm. To complete your patio furniture set, you may want a mosquito trap of some kind.

Techniques For Keeping Cats Out Of Your Garden

August 21st, 2010 No comments

It is very difficult to keep cats out of your garden, but do not give up, it can be managed. Cat owners may not understand why gardeners want to prevent cats gaining access to their gardens, but there are justifiable reasons, it is not always that gardeners hate cats. Cats are ferocious hunters and can also be very destructive.

For instance, my next door neighbour had a cat, but became lonely when her daughter moved away, so she allowed the cat to to have young. Now she has six cats. But cats are not like dogs. My dog stays in my garden not upsetting anyone except by barking if a stranger walks past the gate However, that is his job and he is not only warning me but the neighbours too. These six cats do not remain in their own garden though, so we have all acquired six cats whether we want them or not.

The first problem I noticed was that birds stopped coming to pick my dog’s bowl clean in the afternoon. Then I saw a cat killing a lizard, a lovely nine inch specimen and then I remembered not seeing a lot of lizards recently. There is one lizard, the Tokay, that they have completely wiped out – I used to listen to them calling at night, but no longer.

Cats also dig up plants when they defecate and use furniture as scratching boards, so I do not want these destructive animals in my garden. But how do you keep cats out of your garden?

Walls are rarely protection against cats, but cats will often prowl along the bottom of walls and if they come across a hole, they will probably go in out of inquisitiveness, so repair all low-level gaps in your fences. There is not much you can do about the top of your wall other than putting broken glass or electrified wiring up there, but that is not a good idea.

Some dogs are good at keeping cats away, but not all. My dog got a nasty and completely unexpected swipe of claws across his nose one day. He used to chase them when they were kittens, but now they have grown up, he only growls to tell me a cat is on the premises. I cannot blame him.

In Australia, many gardeners believe that transparent bottles full of water confuse cats, so they stay away, but in my experience, only Australian cats react in that manner.

A row of prickly bushes or flowers along the base of a wall where cats regularly come in works. At the bottom of high walls too, where the cat cannot see them until he is on top of the wall. I often see cats mewing (in frustration, I hope) on the top of one of my walls. The only way down is to go back.

If you still cannot keep cats out, then you will have to train them not to come in. This is easiest achieved by using several methods. If cats are using your flower pots are toilets, try smearing the pots with pepper, lavender, lemon, mustard, or tobacco. Or you could leave a mothball in each pot. Some of these will work for you, others will not.

Then there are commercial repellents, but I do not want to use them. However, if you have a big garden and a big problem, it could be the only method. There are also high frequency sound emitters. Humans cannot hear them, but nearly all animals can, so I think that that is deplorable too.

At night, motion-activated external lighting is a great upset to cats. Cats have very sensitive night vision so a quick flash from a floodlamp really puts them off a garden.

The best deterrent is water. You can buy motion-activated sprinklers, which are excellent at keeping cats out of your garden, but I like to sit in my office or in the garden with a powerful water pistol and squirt them by hand. The lizards have not come back yet, but neither do the cats quite so frequently either.

Understanding How Outdoor Structures Utilize Retractable Roofs

August 18th, 2010 No comments

There are certain instances in which a property owner would like a certain outdoor area to have a roof to protect people form certain weather elements, yet they find it unnecessary to have a roof when the weather is nice. There is a roofing option that can meet such a need and this is why we will take a look at retractable roofs. These units create quite the unique appearance.

The first thing a person might be wondering is what this type of roof actually is. The concept is a very simple to understand and you might have seen it at play before. This term describes a type of roof, usually glass, in which the larger portion of it can be retracted back and left open to the sky. There are many applications in which this design is utilized.

One popular place that people tend to see such designs is the indoor water parks. This type of design creates a water park that is indoors yet outdoors at the very same time. Nobody likes the way that harsh weather can dampen the fun that they are trying to have at such an attraction. With this type of design, a water park can be run effectively in the rain or shine.

There are so many great restaurant that offer the guest an area outside on a patio where they could be seated if they desire. There are so many people that would prefer to dine in this are rather than inside of a building, as long as the weather is permitting. These structures allow people to eat outdoors even if the weather would have other intentions.

It is important for anyone who is considering such a product to keep in mind that the design options are practically endless. So many structures have been designed to mimic the look of a roof that would commonly be found over the average home. Keep in mind that many people utilize dome shape structures as they are covering areas that are far more circular in nature.

This structures give the property owner a great place to arrange and then mount lighting equipment. So many of these enclosed areas will have visitors during the nighttime hours and it would be nice for the space to be properly illuminated. All a property owner has to do is pick a placement and color strategy to create the ultimate outdoor lighting expression for their enclosed space.

A great deal of firms happen to actually specialize in this type of roofing structure. If you choose such a firm for your needs, you are bound to get the best possible results for the most effective price. There are firms out there that have great websites with tons of photos for you to view and this will help you build ideas around what you are actually looking for.

Now that we are through explaining the concepts behind retractable roofs, you might want to visit some of the websites that are owned by the companies that specialize in their creation. This will allow you to get an idea of what type of structure might be right for the property that you own. Do not forget how great an outdoor enclosure is with the flexibility of such a roof over it.

Whether it is pool enclosures for observatories, operable skylights over an indoor swimming pool or large span retractable skylights for an indoor water park, an expert in retractable enclosures is up to the job.

Tips On How To Choose A Landscaping Service

July 22nd, 2010 No comments

To have a perfect manicured lawn is not as hard as you may think, especially if you know how to pick a landscaping service that’ll make sure to take care of your lawn without having to pay high prices. While you’re searching for a landscaping service, you might want to keep in mind some of the pointers given below.

The first place to begin your landscape service hunt is among your acquaintances. So ask every one you know if they can recommend you one that does a great job at a sensible price. The first people to ask are obviously those who are lawn-owners and, therefore, familiar with this kind of service. You’re more likely to find a landscape service through them, than by any other means. It wouldn’t be a bad idea if you checked those landscape services suggested to you with the Better Business Bureau and find out what they have to say about them. The reputation of any company can be easily checked this way. You will also be able to find out if the landscaping company you’re inquiring about, is a member of any professional lawn care association, and all you want to know about the services they’re licensed to supply. Some landscaping services also offer to apply specific chemicals and fertilizers on your lawn. The application of chemicals is strictly monitored in some states.

2. Do your research: the first, thing you have to do, is decide on the type of services you need and from there, you can begin getting estimates from many different companies on the fees that are charged for these services. To avoid misunderstandings and idle talk when contacting landscaping companies, make sure that your services list is ready.

You will have to decide if you need just someone to cut your lawn or an entire set of services; if the latter, then you’ll have to start thinking about things like lawn size and irrigation and seasonal maintenance. Not to mention, you will also have to decide whether your lawn needs pesticides or fertilizers, or both. There is a great number of services that your lawn can benefit from, such as de-thatching, reseeding, core aeration, etc. It wouldn’t be a bad idea if you invited the landscaping company to do an evaluation of your lawn, so that you can get a clear picture of the type of services that you need, and learn if they are able to provide them.

Since money is always an issue when hiring any service, you need to start thinking about it, too. Find out how much they charge for its services and get a written estimate of the overall cost for keeping up your lawn. This will help narrow the choices for services since price is one of the important factors in determining the service you should pick.

Basically, you should pick a service that provides you with what you need at reasonable prices, and make sure they’re a trusted name in the field.

DIY Router Table Programs – The Easy Way To Evade Junk Programs

June 2nd, 2010 No comments

Any woodworking hobbyist is going to need a router table at one point or another, especially as their ability increases. Building your own is not just fun and satisfying; it will make you more confident with your abilities that something that you built will be so sturdy, even as you employ it week after week.

Like all woodworking projects, it never wounds to have plans. However, you cannot use just any DIY router table plans. So how can you find the good ones?

First, if they’re free, be skeptical. Plans are costly because someone built them, and that costs money. Charging for the plans is their technique of recovering the costs. Following that, it is sensible that paid plans are higher quality (they have been tested). Now, not all free plans are bad. Some people don’t have to cover the expenses and are glad to share the plans that they’ve used with anyone who needs them. Those people are superb, but only a few. So be careful.

Second, decide on the sort of table you need. There are 3 differing sorts, and if you want a table top router table, DIY router table plans for a standalone table are not going to be that helpful. Which type you need (of table top, movable, and standalone) relies on two things: how much space you have and how big of a project you’re doing? If you are only working on a mailbox table top will be fine. If you are making a bed, you will likely need a standalone. So just figure out what you need before you start looking for plans; it’ll save everyone a gigantic headache later on.

After you have decided what type you want, start looking for the DIY router table plans that match your wants. If you’re a beginner, find amateur plans. If you have been in woodworking 15 years, you almost certainly are bored reading this but you does not want beginner plans. Irrespective of what, confirm there’s a cut list so you know what supplies you need, and have fun building your router table.

Gardening Shoes And Boots – It’s Important To Protect Your Feet While Gardening

May 27th, 2010 No comments

Comfort and safety make gardening shoes practical at the very minimum. They do not look great but they definitely make a better selection than an old pair of sneakers in which you get drenched. People who spend a lot of time within their garden understand how many sets of shoes or boots they are able to wreck while doing things at home.

Gardening shoes are usually easy to put on and remove. Such shoes is easy to wear. Then, gardening shoes must be watertight and weather resistant. The cheapest material here is rubber, and even though such shoes will not keep you warm, they keep you dry. Only buy solid gardening shoes because you can easily harm your feet outside. There are thorns, branches and even clutter that can hurt you in the event that you do not have good defense from the footwear.

Colors are no problem, you are able to choose anything you like. It is more like a personal choice than a need since you can buy the dullest gardening shoes possible or some very brightly colored ones. Who cares in the end? Rubber boots would be the only replacement for gardening shoes. They really are a necessity when you work in lots of mud, dirt and water. Many models go well over the ankle up to the knee, helping you keep warm and protecting your jeans as well, not from dirt but most precisely from water.

It’s probably advisable to have both gardening shoes and boots at home and use them based on the circumstances. If your local supply store does not have such specific footwear, you can find the items online. Rubber shoes is the cheapest, yet there are higher priced models that contain watertight features thanks to an incorporated layer of Gore-Tex. This signifies that rubber garden shoes still predominate in the customers’ preferences.

Gardening shoes ought to be changed once annually or more often if they show symptoms of wear and tear. Usually, when used everyday, rubber footwear won’t last you that long. Yet, the fact that they’re low cost , would not make the expense noteworthy. Change the gardening shoes when they have holes or cuts simply because you’ll get soaked.

I truly have fun with writing articles around the topic of gardening and landscaping, but I also choose to craft web content regarding various other subjects as well. One such subject is organic lawn care tips.
