Techniques For Using Soldering Irons

March 28th, 2010 No comments

Holding a soldering iron is similar like writing a name on a piece of paper. Handling a soldering iron needs some basic knowledge and safety measures. Never touch the tip of the tool is it is hot enough to cause any serious injury to your hand. Heat the surface to be soldered using the tip of the soldering iron. Tin and lead are mixed together to make flux. The alternate name of soldering is tinning because the percentage of tin in flux is high. Flux comes in various sized reels.

Then apply the solder perfectly to the joint and make sure that the solder flows in a shape of a volcano i.e. peak style. If you notice that the solder makes a dip shape, you can conclude that the joint is absolutely dry. The odd shape of the solder can also tell about the uneven results. If the result is glittering, you can be sure that the job work was done perfectly.

Check out at the local hardware store or retail stores for a variety of soldering irons. Today, the use of soldering iron has become important in the crafting of stained glass. As the wattage power is high, the soldering iron can easily undertake such activity.

A desoldering braid is generally used to repair a solder that is normally old or needs more attention. It is generally made of copper and chemically treated to easily amalgamate with the metal flux. Always place the desoldering braid on the soldering joint and heat the copper through the soldering iron to facilitate removal and cleaning of the metal flux.

Take the help of clamps and attach them to the preferred area for soldering. Don’t shake because doing such can easily distort the joint resulting in an uneven join. Let it cool naturally.

Soldering needs a clean environment. The use of a ventilated room can reduce the health hazards to a certain extent. The tip of the soldering iron should be properly cleaned and make sure you wash your hands after use. As the tip of the soldering iron is very hot, makes sure that it is not attached to any PCB or wire components.

Ensure that the soldering iron is kept in its own stand. Your hands can be severely burnt, if you try to touch the tip. Keep the first aid tools in a nearby place. Because, playing with electronic items can be very risky indeed.

Maintaining the tip of the soldering iron is easy. You can use a damp sponge for an effective removal. Add a little flux as it helps to heat the tip easily. Finally, make sure that the tip is not in contact with any surface.

Manual Metal Arc Welding Commnly Known as Stick or Arc Welding

December 24th, 2009 No comments

Arc welding is probably the most easily and readily available welding process on the face of the earth. Just about anyone can get access to an arc welder. Arc welding is also called stick welding, and the technical name for this welding process is manual metal arc welding or MMAW for short.

MMAW or manual metal arc welding is the longer technical name so don’t go saying you are doing that type of welding. If you do people will think your a bit wacko. All you have to do is say that you can do arc or stick welding.

Essentially an arc welder is just a big electrical transformer. Its job is to transform electricity. What does it transform it into you ask? Well the transformer in an arc welder will transform the power coming into the welder, i.e. from the power point at 110v, 220v, 240 or 415v etc into a more stable and controlled power supply that is usable for welding.

The majority of arc welding machines weld with direct current called which is called DC. The input power is always an alternating current called AC, it goes through the transformer and comes out at a lower voltage that is rectified.

You can actually weld using two car batteries buy hooking them together. If you add the two together you will get 24volts and the raw amps that a single car battery can put out is huge. Now you have two of them and you can actually weld with this.

If you keep a set of good quality jumper leads in the back of you four wheel drive and a packet of welding rods you too will be able to do on the spot welding. A good size of rod to use for this would be in the 2.0mm diameter range. Use either E6012 or E6013 rods, as they are the easy to weld with.

Get your jumper leads out and hook one to the positive terminal and one to the negative terminal. Then all you have to do is join the other two terminals which will be negative and positive. You might be able to use some of the existing wiring from the dual battery setup for this.

Then simply clamp the jumper leads to the now larger 24volt battery, and you have a quick and simple arc welding machine that you can use to make roadside repairs in the middle of nowhere.

Arc welding can be easy to learn if you do it the right way the first time.

The Amazing World Of Demolition

December 23rd, 2009 No comments

Demolishing a building is far more than just tearing them apart and knocking them down. There is far more to the art of demolition than just destruction. Both demolition and deconstruction are sort of an art form. But deconstruction is a more careful tear down of buildings so important pieces can be salvaged for re-use. These items have to be taken apart carefully.

For small buildings such as houses, demolishing is quite a simple process. Either manually or with mechanical equipment, buildings are pulled down. Buildings that are larger, like office buildings, require something a little heavier.

Typically a wrecking ball which is nothing but a heavy weight attached to a strong wire, is swung by crane into the building. This form of demolishing is best against masonry, but can be hard to control. They are also less effective than newer hydraulic shear methods. This is an example of non-explosive demolishing.

When taking down larger buildings such as stadiums and skyscrapers, demolition is usually done by implosion. The actual implosion only takes seconds, but the prep work takes quite a lot longer. This type of demolishing is key in urban areas where neighborhoods can be affected by the destruction of a building. Implosions are designed for buildings to fall into their own footprint, leaving no damage to the local area.

While the implosion takes seconds, the preparation can take weeks to months to properly plan. First, the building needs to be stripped out. Copper is removed, as this is valuable and can be recycled. Copper can be found in both wiring and plumbing. Glass and insulation are also removed as these can both cause damage to the area. After, non weight bearing walls are removed along with drywall.

The demolition company will then set the charges, these are nitroglycerin and TNT. Holes are drilled into the floors of select areas and the TNT is placed inside. Smaller areas are wrapped with detonation cord. They try to use as little explosives as possible to take down the structure. This is to ensure safety for the workmen and the surrounding area.
