Some graffiti is pretty, a colorful embellishment of otherwise drab surrounds. Such art work, though attractive, still forms a kind of vandalism. Other examples include crude language, love hearts with the names of enamored teenagers, lewd drawings and scribbles of all sorts. Past efforts to clean such graphics from public buildings and surfaces often included a lot of scrubbing or re-painting. Modern custodial staff and city councils can applaud the invention of anti graffiti coating which may prevent such hard work.

For example, one of the relatively inexpensive methods of protecting buildings takes the form of a sacrificial coating. The sacrifice comes during clean-up, when graffiti is removed from a structure. Both paint and coating come off at the same time requiring a new coat to be applied.

This method has its advantages. For one thing, sacrificial coatings are relatively inexpensive. For another, they go on generally clear, changing the look of a building as little as possible. The trouble comes when graffiti becomes a recurrent problem, leading to time consuming reapplications and, potentially, realizing only a short term saving. Furthermore, constant stripping and re-coating can damage the original facade.

Semi-sacrificial coating, also known as a safety shield, works in a similar way but can withstand usually two paint removals before being stripped. It requires a combined method of cleaning. Solvents and pressure washing clean both the paint and the coating off. They feature similar benefits to sacrificial coatings as well as the potential for long-term expense with repeated stripping and re-applying.

For a more expensive approach, cities and building owners might consider permanent protective coating. Initial outlay may seem too much in comparison with sacrificial coatings, but in the long term the permanent type may save you money and man power. A permanent coating, if applied correctly, should last as long as your structure lasts.

These products contain chemicals which do not allow paint, marker or other materials to bond with the coating. They come away when cleaned with solvents and pressure washing. The coating itself remains.

Consider ecological brands of anti graffiti coating along with traditional brands. They feature the non-stick properties a consumer expects to get. These are water based, non-toxic products. Some of these clean easily with only soap and water, eliminating the need for harsh chemicals, though a bit of effort may be involved. Others require a bit of detergent or paint thinner depending on the material used to mark the surface. They should go on clear, becoming a hard protective surface.
